Tension at Manchester United as Fernandes and Carrick clash over Como defeat

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes and head coach Michael Carrick have appeared to disagree over the team’s tactics following a 4-1 defeat to Como in the UEFA Champions League.

Punch reported that the heavy loss has intensified scrutiny of Carrick, with the result leaving Manchester United supporters disappointed with the team’s performance.

After the match, Carrick apologised to nearly 700 Manchester United supporters who had travelled to watch the team. He walked across the pitch and raised his hands towards the fans.

However, Fernandes’ post-match comments drew attention to a possible difference in opinion between the captain and his coach, particularly over the decision not to press Como players aggressively to win back possession.

Speaking to TNT Sports on Wednesday, Fernandes said allowing opponents to keep possession for extended periods could boost their confidence and give them greater control of a match.

He explained that the coaching staff had decided against pressing every Como player directly, opting instead to leave space behind the team in an attempt to regain possession.

Fernandes’ comments suggested that he believed Manchester United needed to apply greater pressure on opponents, particularly to disrupt their build-up play and prevent them from launching attacks comfortably.

Responding after being informed of his captain’s remarks, Carrick stressed the importance of effort and commitment, arguing that tactics alone could not guarantee success.

“Whatever system or tactics you use, if players are not quick, are not pressing players up the pitch and are not recovering back, you are not going to win,” Carrick said.

Although Carrick did not mention Fernandes by name, his response placed emphasis on players’ execution and work rate rather than tactics alone.

The contrasting remarks have raised questions about Manchester United’s tactical approach and whether the players and coaching staff share the same understanding of how the team should perform.

Fernandes’ position as captain makes his comments particularly significant, as scrutiny continues over Carrick’s leadership and the team’s performances.
